Digital Forensics

Digital Forensics, part of Security Operations

We identify, collect, analyze, and report on valuable digital information related to computer crimes.

What is Digital Forensics?

Digital Forensics is a branch of forensic science that deals with digital devices and computer related crimes. This term was interchanged with computer forensics but has now expanded to the investigation of storing digital data, such as those on desktop and mobile devices, network data, and databases.

Branches of Digital Forensics:

Digital Forensics extends beyond computers and hard drives, it’s also linked to networks and data. Here are the five most common types of Digital Forensics:

1. Computer Forensics:

Computer Forensics deals with the information and data stored in volatile and non-volatile memory. Devices are searched for digital artifacts related to the investigation. Embedded systems (digital devices with rudimentary computing power and onboard memory) are looked at in our lab.

2. Mobile Device Forensics:

Mobile Device Forensics is similar to Computer Forensics, but Mobile Device Forensics often deals with data relating to the recovery of information held on mobile phones and devices. A person’s movements can be confirmed using access logs and GPS data.

3. Network Forensics:

Network Forensics deals with the analysis of computer network traffic for the purposes of evidence collection and analysis.

4. Forensic Data Analysis:

Forensic Data Analysis examines data with the aim to find patterns of fraudulent activities resulting from financial crimes.

5. Database Forensics:

Database Forensics includes the investigation of database contents and log files to recover information relevant to an investigation.

Why is Digital Forensics important to you?

If you have a breach or require evidence collection, it’s important to preserve artifacts following accepted forensic protocols. The evidence collected will not be admissible in court without this.
